One play leads to another

A number of years ago, John Guare was asked by the Paris Review, What's your definition of a good play? To which he answered: One that gets me writing the next one. A couple of year's ago I realized I'd started writing a new play. When I closed my eyes, I would see the image of an older woman walking into a bare room; the only sound, the slow click-clack of her heels on a hard, cold floor. She would sit in a chair, then turn to us and begin speaking. I couldn't make out the words, but the sound of her voice was that of a lone cello: low, beautiful, haunting. I started putting words to paper; almost immediately, what came out shot off in an entirely different direction. What I finished with was Seeing the Elephant - a play whose sound is more akin to the syncopation and joy of a truly smoking big band. In rehearsals for its premiere, I realized the image of that woman and the sound of her voice were still in my head. What did she want? What was she saying? Answering those two questions created hundreds more, and writing to answer them all let me to Madagascar.
