At 18, Lance Corporal Elliot Ortiz crossed over into Iraq. At 19, he received a Purple Heart. Now, back from active duty, Elliot is annointed
a hometown hero. As he comes to terms with his memories of war, he uncovers the military experiences of both his father and grandfather,
discovering the delicate link that unites the three men across time.

Quiara Alegría Hudes (Playwright) was born and raised in West Philadelphia and now lives in New York. Her plays - including YEMAYA'S BELLY (Portland Stage Company), ELLIOT, A SOLDIER'S FUGUE (Page 73 Productions), and THE ADVENTURES OF BARRIO GRRRL! (Miracle Theatre) - have been produced at theaters nationwide and will soon be published by Dramatists Play Service. Her musical IN THE HEIGHTS opens off-Broadway in February 2007, with a book by Hudes and music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Honors include The Clauder Prize, The Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting, and The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Latino Playwriting Award. She is also a composer and earned a B.A. in Music Composition from Yale, then an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Brown. At age 12 her first play was produced by Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival and Hudes still returns home to lead workshops for young scribes.
Lorenzo D. Gutierrez III (Elliot) is proud to be making his New Theatre debut. He attended Dreyfoos School of the Arts for six years, then went on to the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts for two years, where he earned his acting certificate. Other productions include: Twelfth Night, Blood Brothers, The Life, and Five Guys Named Moe. He would like to dedicate this performance to his parents, the #1 influence in his life and to his friends who inspire him to continue practicing his craft. (You know who you are.)
Steve Gladstone (Grandpop) has recently completed his second year with the South Florida Shakespeare Festival playing Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing and Shylock in last season's The Merchant of Venice. He received the Hindman Award and a Carbonell nomination for the Blind Man in New Theatre's production of Blind Date. He has been acting professionally on stage since 1974. His motion picture credits include roles in Hot Stuff, The Island, and The Specialist. Featured roles in local and national commercials include a Clio award for the Miami Herald. Steve is president of the Florida branch of Screen Actors Guild and a member of Actors' Equity Association.
Evelyn Perez (Ginny) is a native of Miami, Florida. She received a BFA from Florida International University, as well as, an A.A. from Miami Dade Community College. Evelyn has worked at a number of prominent Florida theatres, including Coconut Grove Playhouse, Actors' Playhouse, Hollywood Playhouse, GableStage, Florida Stage and Teatro Avante, to name a few. In the last 3 years, Evelyn has also acted in a number of locally produced independent films, namely Hyparxis Production, two of which were in the running for Project Greenlight and The Cannes Film Festival. This will mark Evelyn's New Theatre debut.
Christopher Vicchiollo (Pop) has been performing in South Florida since he got here from the cold North of Chicago 12 years ago. He is thrilled to make this his second performance with New Theatre. Previous performances by Chris include roles in Six Degrees of Separation, Little Mary Sunshine, White Liars, Way of the World, The Apple Tree, a host of original plays by Edge's Jim Tomanney and participation in Hollywood Boulevard's Shakespeare Festival which led to 5 substantial roles (Petruchio, Oberon and Mac Duff, to name a few). Chris encourages all walks of life to pursue their own expression; because without it, we are mere animals.
Betsy Paull-Rick (Production Stage Manager) is pleased to return to New Theatre after serving as PSM for over 20 consecutive productions at the Mosaic Theatre in Plantation. No stranger to the other side of the footlights, South Florida audiences may remember her as Judy in A Chorus Line, Jeanne in Hair, Tiny Tim in Scrooge, or Diane in 42nd Street, among others. Recent directing and choreography credits include Hair and Fanny & Sadie, both at the Tamarac Theatre. Betsy is the proud recipient of a Curtain Up Award nomination for Best Choreography for A New Brain, the Musical. Many thanks go to Ricky and Eileen, as well as to the rest of this incredible company. As always, much gratitude and love goes to Rob, Jon and Michael.
