The Diaries by John Strand
March 5 - April 3, 2005

>> Photo Gallery

With Bruce Linser, Annemaria Rajala, Barbara Sloan and Robert Strain. Directed by Rafael de Acha.

In The Diaries, John Strand looks at how we deal with past guilt and retribution in the context of a gripping yarn involving a famous American scientist who is revealed to have a conflicted past.

John Strand, author of New Theatre's 2002 hit production Tom Walker gives New Theatre, and by extension, South Florida audiences the gift of this new play.

From John Strand's The Diaries,:
"13 February, 1943. I am among the retreating soldiers of the 6th German army. For three months, I flee Russia and make my way across what is left of Europe. I may one day take my place in hell, but I have already seen a glimpse of it here on this earth... 8 April. I arrive back in Paris. She was right. The city doesn't exist anymore. The end is coming. Shortages of food and fuel. Fear and revenge. Triumph of the vampires... I get off the train and go straight to her apartment. It's empty. There is a letter with the concierge. It tells me there is a baby. Her relatives have taken it to the country, she doesn't say where. I am never able to find out exactly when she was arrested, or how she died."

The play contains some sexual situations and is best suited for audiences age 18 and older.

"Action-packed and heroic" - The Washington Post

"...a fevered mix of classic literary noir and contemporary hip psychodrama... The atmosphere under de Acha's direction is both tense and intense... The tension plows below the surface..." - Jack Zink, Sun Sentinel

Production Partners: Mel and Nancy Morgenstern and The Manny and Ruthy Cohen Foundation; The Audrey Love Charitable Foundation; The Dramatists Guild Fund.
