Melody Cooper

Melody Cooper is the 2003 recipient of the Jane Chambers Award for Playwriting for Day of Reckoning, which also won the MultiStages New Works Competition in NY. The play was produced in NYC at the Kraine Theater in 2004, and by Castillo Theatre/Five Points on 42nd Street in 2005.

Her one-act, Reading Zimbabwe, was a winner of a University of Louisville National Playwriting Award and was produced in NYC three times in 2003: by Epic Rep at DR2 with premieres by Lee Blessing and Romulus Linney, as well as at American Theater of Harlem, and at the Drilling Company. Ms. Cooper's one-act, Down Here, about 9/11 volunteers at Ground Zero, was produced by the Drilling Company at 78th Street Theater Lab in two highly successful runs in New York in 2002.

Most recently completed: a full-length biographical play, with music, about Marian Anderson for a Tony Award-winning actress, and a play about Rwanda entitled Sweet Mercy, which she is currently working with director Michael Sexton to develop.

Ms. Cooper is also an actress. Credits include the title role in Target Margin Theatre's acclaimed OBIE Award-winning production of Mamba's Daughters (AUDELCO Award nomination). Also nominated for an AUDELCO in 2000 for Rosalind in Blue Heron Theater's production of As You Like It. Winner of a 2000 OOBR Award for her work in two roles in Shay Youngblood's Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery. Most recently portrayed Lucy in Castillo/Five Points production of Day of Reckoning in NYC. TV and film work includes roles in independent films and Law & Order. She is a member of Epic Rep.
