Steven Chambers
Steven is the Literary Manager at New Theatre. He has been a member of the arts communities in Austin, TX, Nashville and Knoxville, TN, Atlanta, GA, and now South Florida, where he has lived since 1999. He attended Saint Edward's University in Austin, where the department was headed by Edward Mangum, a founder of the Arena Stage in Washington, DC. While there, he worked with veteran actors such as Russ Tamblyn, Eileen Heckart, and Jackie Coogan. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with an emphasis in Acting/Directing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he studied with Marian Hampton, Tom Cooke, and Wandalie Henshaw. He has been an actor, director, stage manager and dramaturg, having worked with the Clarence Brown Company (Knoxville); Theatre Nashville; Vortex Repertory, Different Stages, Theatre Eklektos and the Zachary Scott Theatre (Austin); Aurora Theatre, Other Choice Productions, Art Attack, Onstage Atlanta and OutProud Theatre (Atlanta). In South Florida, he has been involved with New Theatre, the Broward Stage Door Theatre, Footlights, Inc., Sol Theatre and the Public Theatre of South Florida, where he was the Associate Artistic Director for two seasons. South Florida acting or directing credits include productions of Fifth of July, Victor/Victoria, Private Lives, California Suite, An Ideal Husband, Julie Johnson, Earnest in Love, The Little Foxes, The MO of MI, Othello, On Golden Pond, and The Normal Heart. Steven has also been involved in the process of developing new plays for many years. He worked with new scripts while in Austin, including Nikki and Bobby and The Lost Armadillo Café, both by Mark Leonard, and Madwomen, by Sterling Price-McKinney. While in Atlanta, he worked with Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Pamela Parker in developing her plays Second Samuel and A Higher Place in Heaven, both of which were featured at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, and subsequently toured the country. Locally, he has participated in the development process of plays by South Florida playwrights including Tony Finstrom (As Fate Would Have It), Monnie King (Mother's Gift), and Lauren Feldman (Fill Our Mouths). Ms. Feldman's Carbonell nominated play was produced last season here at New Theatre; Steven served as an American Sign Language coach and performer. He has also been involved with the Lavender Footlights Festival for several years, helping bring to life works by playwrights David-Matthew Barnes (Sloe Gin Fizz), John Reoli (One Seat in the Shade), and (writer of New Theatre's recent production Kissing) Robert Caisley (The Lake). |
