I always go with my instincts when I paint and I like to follow my own rules. With time, I have found that this works best for me and getting to my solutions.
In the past when I tried to follow certain rules, I became frustrated and the end results were NEVER pleasing to me leading me to paint over the previous image
and allow subtle traces from the previous image to remain. The less rules I followed, the more satisfied I became and the more pleasure I got from painting.
